Clarifying Values - Part Three: Clarity

Understanding the “Why” Behind Every Decision

Have you ever found yourself wondering, “Why are we doing this?” It’s a common question, especially when we don't fully understand the purpose behind certain decisions. That's why clarity about our values is essential at HBC—it helps us understand not just what we're doing but, more importantly, why we're doing it.

Why Does Clarity Matter?

Leadership expert Tim Keller wisely points out, “People follow leaders who clearly communicate the ‘why’ behind the ‘what.’” When we clarify our values, we're doing more than just listing good ideas—we're communicating why our church exists, why specific ministries matter, and why we're making changes or adopting new strategies.

Clarity helps prevent unnecessary conflict by ensuring everyone understands the purpose behind decisions. When values are clear, decisions that might otherwise be uncomfortable become easier to embrace because everyone sees how these decisions align with our core convictions. Without it, churches often experience confusion or frustration. But when we have clear, compelling values, we can avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and unite around a common vision.

How Clarity Impacts Our Church

When our values are clearly defined and communicated, several positive outcomes follow:

  • Unity in Mission: Everyone can rally around shared values rather than personal preferences, reducing tension and promoting harmony.
  • Stronger Commitment: People are more willing to commit their time, energy, and resources when they clearly see the purpose behind the church's initiatives.
  • Greater Effectiveness: Clearly articulated values keep our church focused and effective, ensuring every ministry aligns directly with our mission of connecting people to the hope of the gospel.

How Do We Get Clear?

Clarifying values involves several practical steps:

  • Consistent Communication: Regularly reminding everyone of our values in sermons, teaching, and communications.
  • Practical Alignment: Evaluating all ministries and decisions through the lens of our stated values.
  • Leadership Modeling: Leaders embodying and clearly explaining how each decision connects to our identity as a unique people within a unique context with a unique calling.

Moving Forward Together

Clarifying our values provides the clarity we need to unite our church around a compelling vision. As Hazelwood Baptist Church continues this journey, we can confidently move forward, knowing exactly who we are, why we exist, and how we uniquely accomplish our mission to connect people to the hope of the gospel.

Together, let's move forward with clarity, unity, and purpose, excited about the future God is calling us to pursue.

Scriptures to Refelct on:

Ephesians 5:15–17 (ESV) | “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
